MedizinerJourney with scholarship program

Medical care for the population is an important location factor.

Demographic change and the associated ageing of the population in the rural district play an important role for the health region plus district of Wunsiedel im Fichtelgebirge and its orientation: a quarter of the local population is aged 65 or over (as at 12/2014, source: Bavarian State Office for Statistics). For this target group in the district of Wunsiedel im Fichtelgebirge in particular, it is becoming increasingly difficult to visit a GP practice without outside help. In some of the smaller municipalities, GP care has declined in recent years and GPs are finding it difficult to find a successor.
GR+ has been addressing this important issue for the district since 2016 and has already implemented various measures to recruit new GPs (e.g. Doctors’ Lounge).

Medical Journey” project

As part of the creation of the new district development concept for the district of Wunsiedel im Fichtelgebirge in connection with the Smart City funding program, the “Mediziner-Journey” project was created; in brief, it involves supporting medical students from the start of their studies, including a scholarship, right through to their possible establishment as a GP in the district.

Students of human medicine are to be involved in a process from the time they leave school, starting in their final year and ending with specialist training or setting up in a practice. The aim is to keep students in the region and root them in the region through measures such as project days in the sixth form at grammar schools, the organization of nursing internships (e.g. via an online platform), involvement in existing medical student get-togethers, university marketing, experience exchanges and a scholarship programme.

Another important step is now being taken with a support program for medical students in the form of a scholarship from the district of Wunsiedel i. Fichtelgebirge.

Up to two students per year are accepted into the scholarship program, who have previously undergone an application and selection process.
The final decision on admission to the scholarship program is made by the district committee.
Each accepted student receives a monthly payment of € 500 for a maximum of 60 months. The district council has approved the necessary funding for this. In addition, the student receives, among other things, an experienced family doctor from the district of Wunsiedel i. Fichtelgebirge as a mentor. In return, the student undertakes to complete at least one year of specialist training as a general practitioner in a GP practice in the district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge after completing their medical studies and to establish themselves as a GP in the region for four years immediately after completing their specialist training.
The Medical Journey will be developed further in the following years.
