Smart Fichtelgebirge
Rural regions in Germany should learn from the Fichtelgebirge. This is the aim of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community and in 2019, the region became the first district in Germany to be named a model region for the “Smart Cities” project.
This was followed by a two-year strategy process during which citizens were able to contribute their ideas for the sustainable design of the district. The district development concept with integrated digital strategy “Freiraum Fichtelgebirge 2030 – Smart. Sustainable. Resilient.” was finally adopted by the district council in March 2021. The funded implementation phase extends until mid-2026.
Mission Statement

Resilience
The “Freiraum Fichtelgebirge” supports and promotes the strengthening of regional identity in order to increase the attractiveness of the region and underpin the independence of the district.

Nature and environmental protection
In the “Freiraum Fichtelgebirge”, concepts for sustainable development and environmental protection are the core drivers for the expansion of the economy and tourism.

Innovation and digitalization
The district will actively promote innovation and drive digitalization in all areas.
Implementation of the mission statement
The implementation of these strategic cornerstones requires a holistic and intersectoral approach. Accordingly, successful digitalization should not be limited exclusively to the economy. Innovation is relevant for all areas, especially social areas such as health promotion, education and care. Nature conservation should not only benefit tourists, but also locals. The resilience of the region depends largely on the perceived quality of life. This in turn is a complex and highly sensitive structure of economic, social, technical and political factors.

Future projects

Tomorrow is everyone’s business
Continue to contribute your ideas to one of the twelve topics that concern us and help shape our future! We deal with infrastructure, mobility, health, economy, energy and climate protection, nature and agriculture, education, social affairs, tourism and culture, image, administration and volunteering.
The best of both worlds
Seize opportunities, avoid risks
We recognize the opportunities of digitalization, but we are also aware of the risks. It is important to us that everyone is involved and that everyone can contribute their concerns and ideas. In this way, digitalization should benefit citizens and not the other way around. Ultimately, the focus is always on people so that they can continue to live the best life in the Fichtelgebirge in the future.
