Climate protection

“The district of Wunsiedel i. Fichtelgebirge is aware of the challenges of climate change and recognizes the need to actively combat climate change. At the same time, it supports the municipalities in their efforts.”

Unanimous resolution from the district committee, June 2016

Climate protection in the Fichtelgebirge

Solaranlagen im Fichtelgebirge

Climate protection and sustainability are keywords that have taken on an important role in our society. Our landscape, our forests, hills and mountains are unique. It is our duty to protect and preserve them for future generations.
Sustainable and environmentally friendly management is a top priority for us as a district, town or municipality, but also for our companies and citizens.

Next step towards decarbonization

District takes part in the European Energy Award

The district already produces 63 percent of the electricity it needs itself from renewable energy sources. The aim is to get to the point in the coming years where we are able to produce all the energy required in the district ourselves. To achieve this, we are working on a decarbonization strategy. This means: processes in energy production that release CO2 are to be replaced by CO2-free alternatives.

In a first step, two topics will be addressed: the creation of a greenhouse gas balance and the introduction of a management system, at the end of which there will be an external certification that documents and ensures the quality of the decarbonization strategy.
The choice has been made to participate in the European Energy Awards (EEA). The EEA process is structured step by step and runs through the stages of analyzing, planning, implementing, reviewing and, if necessary, adapting over a period of three years. Regular reports are also a central part of the process, at the end of which a status comparable to a DIN ISO certificate is awarded.
