Climate protection in the Fichtelgebirge

Solaranlagen im Fichtelgebirge

Climate protection and sustainability are keywords that have taken on an important role in our society. Our landscape, our forests, hills and mountains are unique. It is our duty to protect and preserve them for future generations.
Sustainable and environmentally friendly management is a top priority for us as a district, town or municipality, but also for our companies and citizens.

Next step towards decarbonization

Progress in climate protection in the district of Wunsiedel i. Fichtelgebirge

On November 14, 2024, the district of Wunsiedel i. Fichtelgebirge was awarded the European Energy Award (EEA) in silver for its dedicated energy and climate protection work. This award recognizes the consistent implementation of numerous measures in the areas of energy efficiency, renewable energies, mobility, and sustainable municipal development.
With the completion of its participation in the EEA, the district is building on the structures and insights developed there and continuing its work in the field of energy and climate protection independently. The goal remains to continue shaping the region as a pioneer of a sustainable and decarbonized energy future.

An important milestone was already reached on December 31, 2023 – 76.8% of the district’s electricity requirements are generated locally and from renewable sources. The continuous expansion of ground-mounted photovoltaic systems is making a significant contribution to this: several large projects were connected to the grid in 2024 and 2025.
At the same time, work is underway on an energy park in Hochfranken to establish a regional electricity market. The goal is to gradually convert all energy-related processes that still emit CO₂ to CO₂-free alternatives. The aim is to make the regional energy supply climate-neutral, independent, and future-proof in the long term.
